The following guided tours can be arranged and we would be pleased to show you the many and varied sights of this historic district where bushrangers lived as large as the landscape they roamed: 1. Stringybark Creek – Site of the famous shoot-out on 26th October, 1878 between the Mansfield police and Australia’s most famous bushranger, Ned Kelly and his gang who elevated themselves from being petty horse thieves to Australia's most wanted outlaws after gunning down three police officers, Sergeant Michael Kennedy and Constables Thomas Lonigan and Michael Scanlan. 2. Power’s Lookout – The mountain ranges afford spectacular views of the King Valley and the Lookout is a challenging 10-minute walk. This is the awe-inspiring vantage point and mountain hideout of bushranger Harry Power who was said to be a young Ned Kelly's bushranging mentor in the early 1870’s. 3. Glenrowan – This is the focal point for anyone interested in the legend of the Kelly Gang. In 1880 Ned Kelly was captured in Glenrowan at the Glenrowan Inn after a bloody battle that killed his brother Dan and accomplices Steve Hart and Joe Byrne, thus bringing his bushranging days to an end. Ned was subsequently hanged at the Melbourne Gaol on 11th November, 1880. 4. Benalla – Known as the "Rose City", Benalla was the epicentre of Ned Kelly's bushranging days and was police headquarters for the Kelly Gang manhunt. Sidney Nolan's tapestry "Glenrowan" depicting the siege is on display at the internationally famous Benalla Art Gallery along with other Kelly-related works. Another Kelly site includes the cemetery where gang member Joe Byrne is buried. 5. King Valley Wineries – Visit the district’s premium wine region and taste the diversity in the cellar doors where wines with exotic names like Albarino and Dolcetto sit alongside traditionals such as Reisling and Shiraz. We will stop at Gracebrook Vineyards in Whitfield for lunch that includes a complimentary glass of wine. 6. Mt Buller – The pinnacle of the high country and Victoria’s winter playground that’s open all year round affording spectacular views of the surrounding district. 7. Ned Kelly Tour – This full day tour includes Stringybark Creek, Power’s Lookout, Glenrowan (lunch stop at Dad & Dave’s Billy Tea Rooms), Benalla and finishes at Mansfield with a visit to the cemetery where the three Mansfield policemen are buried. We will also visit the monument at the beginning of High Street that commemorates the memory of the slain troopers.
