Fitzroy Island Resort offers guests the opportunity to intimately discover the magic of the Great Barrier Reef Australia. Explore the Great Barrier Reef – Snorkelling, Swimming and Boating Fitzroy Island is the perfect spot to visit the Great Barrier Reef from Cairns, and it’s a great land based alternative to the Barrier Reef pontoon experience. You can swim and snorkel in safety off our iconic white sandy beaches, exploring this World Heritage Listed coral reef system at your own pace. Make friends with the sea life, including fish, turtles, dolphins and even whales. Have some fun on the water as well as in it, with activities including paddle boat hire and a water trampoline. A sheltered passage from Cairns and secure moorings make Fitzroy Island an ideal destination for day trips on your own boat or yacht. Get Back to Nature – Walking and Exploring Explore the bush walking tracks throughout the island, like the Lighthouse and Summit walks, with views all the way to the Barrier Reef. Trek to magic spots like Secret Garden and Nuddy Beach, one of Far North Queensland’s most iconic beaches. The Island was converted into a military base during World War II to protect Australia’s mainland from invasion. Most of the walking trails were formed during this time, hence their access to some of the best vantage points in the region, although these days visitors are only on the lookout for the stunning views. 29 km or a 45 min ferry ride with Sunlover Reef Cruises from Cairns. Surrounded by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Daily ferry services depart from Cairns Reef Fleet Terminal at 10:00am am daily (check in by 9.30am at the Sunlover Cruise desk) and return transfers depart the island daily at 4:30pm. Return fares for Resort Guests travelling with Sunlover Reef Cruises are $65 per person ($30 child up to 14 years). Ferry transfers to and from Fitzroy Island need to be pre-booked. Tickets can be purchased directly from us (Phone 07 4044 6700 or stay@fitzroyisland.com). Visiting the island on own yacht or boat is welcomed.
