The Gold Coast will again be the host of the Surf Life Saving Championships at Kurrawa Beach in 2010. The championships we held here up until the last 3 years when it was relocated to Perth. In 2010 it will be back at Kurrawa Beach for the next 3 years.
Running from the 16th until the 21st of March, the Surf Life Saving Championships has several highlights:
The Ironman and Ironwoman races are the ultimate test of a surf lifesaver’s skill and fitness. The event is made up of a combination of running, swimming, board and ski paddling.
The surf boat race involves four rowers and a sweep in an eight metre surf boat, with a maximum of seven crews in each race. When the starter gives the signal the crews row out to sea, past a gate buoy, in the direction of their allocated turning buoy approximately 400m from shore. They turn past this buoy in a clockwise direction and return to shore passing their gate buoy and finish the event on the waters edge.
Competition in the surf race is always tough, as all surf lifesavers are required to have a high level of skill in surf swimming. There are a maximum of 48 competitors in each race. The race commences with athletes lined up on the waters edge, facing out to sea. Competitors swim out to sea around the string of swimming buoys and then return to shore. Surf teams consist of four members who must all swim round all buoys and return to shore. Points are allotted as follows – 1 for first, 2 for second, 3 for third, 4 for fourth. The team with the least number of points is declared the winner.
