World heritage listed Fraser Island is over 120 km long and 30 km wide. It is the largest sand island in the world! Fraser Island is famous for it's pristine fresh water lakes and creeks, peaceful tropical rainforests, and endless sand dunes. Expect to see dingoes, birds, wallabies, flying foxes, possums, and the occassional echidna and tortise. Whales, dugongs, dolphins and turtles also make the waters surrounding Fraser Island their home. Main highlights include the Maheno, Central Station, Lake McKenzie, Eli Creek, The Cathedrals, and the Champagne Pools.
Hervey Bay has a number of great snorkelling and diving spots. The reefs provide a haven for a wide range of colourful and exotic reef fish. Sheltered from the Pacific Ocean, Hervey Bay's calm waters are excellent for swimming, snorkelling, diving and fishing. Our waters are home to many different varieties of fish, sea turtles, dugongs, rays, and many other sea creatures. A favourite diving spot is the Roy Rufus Artifical Reef, which has beautiful gorgonians, sponges, soft corals, trevally, blue parrot, coral trout, groper and blackall. Other popular diving spots are Rooney's and Moon Ledge.
Every year the majestic humpback whales visit Hervey Bay's warm waters from late July to early November. Hervey Bay has become known as the whale watching capital of the world! The humpback whales pass through Hervey Bay as they return from the Antarctic and put on a spectacular display as they frolic for those watching them. Humpback pods put on animated displays of breaching, tail and peduncle slaps, pec slaps, spy hopping, and peduncle arching. Humpbacks grow up to 15 metres in length and weigh up to 45 tonnes. When the humpback calves are born, they weigh up to 1500 kg. Seeing the white whale is an extra special treat for whale watchers.
